The Kent town of Sheerness lies at the mouth of the River Medway on the Isle of Sheppey. It seems an unlikely place to hold a race meeting, but in 1839 it was able to do so when races took place on Thursday 18th July 1839 at Sheppey Court within a quarter of a mile of the town centre. The card opened with the Town Stakes which went to Sir Felix, while the Hunter Stakes saw Mr Matthews’s Countess beat Fleckmore and Starch. The concluding Sheppey Stakes was won by Mr Shrimpton’s Davernay beating Madame Vestris and Gunner. Whilst meetings were held on the Island of Sheppey from 1838 to 1857, this was the only meeting billed as Sheerness Races. |
